The term duplicate content is used if similar content is found via different internet addresses. Intrinsically this would not be a bad thing. However, Google views it differently.

Creating duplicate content happens faster than one thinks. An example is, if one switches to an SSL-certificate. If one does so, the website is found via http:// and https://. From the perspective of Google these are two different websites. Another example is if content is used for different national websites. Especially in the DACH-Region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) this is likely to happen. The same applies for the Region North America and Great Britain.

Online shops also face the problem of duplicate content. Mostly the product descriptions are used from the suppliers and are therefore identical and found on many other online shops. Duplicate content is also created by showing products in different product categories.

The topic of duplicate content is, as Google views it as something negative, relevant for search engine optimization (SEO). The topic should not be neglected even though Google mostly does not rank websites with duplicate content lower.

Of course, the best thing to do is to avoid creating duplicate content. However, if one cannot do so, one can use the “Canonical” Attribute. The canonical Attribute helps to make clear to the search engines which page should be credited as the original. In case of multilingual websites, the “Hreflang” Tag helps to specify the lingual and geographical target of a website for the search engines.
