In a representative study at the end of October 2020, 500 consumers in Germany and 2,100 people worldwide were surveyed about Christmas 2020. The aim of the survey was to find out what consumers expect from advertising and what their purchasing behavior will look like this year’s Christmas. The most important results are listed in the following blog post.

Compared to last year, 32 % of the respondents are more excited about this year’s holiday season. However, 22 % are less excited compared to last year. 46 % of the interviewees are looking forward in somewhat the same way.

Despite the tense economic situation as a result of the Corona crisis, 79% of those surveyed said they wanted to spend the same or more money on Christmas dinner. For Christmas decorations the figure is 64 %. The majority of those surveyed would also like to spend the same or more money on gifts compared to last year.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, around 30 % of the 45-54-year-olds and 40 % of the respondents above the age of 55 said, they would do their Christmas shopping mainly or exclusively in stationary retail outlets.

When asked which factors significantly influence their search for Christmas presents, 45 % said that they would browse in retail stores. Also 45 % of the interviewees said, that the internet influences their search for presents. Therefore, the purchase of gifts is influenced equally by attractively designed salesrooms and by searching the Internet.

Freizeit

As a result of the measures to contain the coronavirus imposed by the Federal Government, many social events will not take place during this year’s holiday season. 27 % of the respondents intend to spend more time streaming movies or series, which was the most common answer. However, 14 % intend to spend more time on DIY projects at home.
